After the success of previously released amplifiers including the Rectifier Twenty-Five, the Nomad and the Caliber, Mesa Boogie now introduces the latest addition to their mini series, the Mark Five Thirty-Five. They've kept the tradition going by fitting this amp with four EL-84 tubes, instead of only two like in the Mark Five Twenty-Five. In addition, there are a load of new features like an independent Solo function to boost the sound per channel, and a complete set of voicing options for the patented CabClone DI cabinet simulator and spring-talk tube reverb.
Switchable wattage with DynaWatt
One of the most remarkable features of the Mark Five Thirty-Five has to be Mesa's patented DynaWatt technology, which makes it possible to switch between 35, 25 and 10 watts. This ensures that saturation point is achieved sooner, which is why this amp is so ideal for small-sized gigs. Furthermore, the Thirty-Five is equipped with two channels with three modes each. Channel 21 offers Clean, Fat and Crunch while channel 2 makes your guitar sparkle with the addition of MKIIC+, MK IV and Xtreme modes. Each channel also has its own Solo boost function.
CabClone D.I.
Mesa Boogie has integrated a complete set of voicing options in the Mark Five Thirty-Five. This means that it has three cabinet-simulated voicing modes and allows for total stand-alone CabClone functionality, minus the output controls. You can choose between open back, closed back and vintage, each having its own characteristic sound. You'll also get a broad spectrum of responses when you plug directly into a mixing console or interface. So, whether you want to record directly, listen via the headphone input, or just practise some riffs, the Mark Five: 35 offers plenty of possibilities to deliver an excellent sound.

Ik gebruik verschillende gitaren en elementen. Samen met een 1x12 mesa wide body cabinet is dit een prima combinatie die ook op wat lagere volumes prima te hanteren is. De master volume van de amp is prima en werkt ook op bedroom levels prima. Hoewel ik de CabClone zag als een groot pluspunt heb ik het feature nog niet gebruikt omdat het geluid op laag volume ook prima is. Daarnaast zijn de clean en fat modes prima als pedal platform. Qua tone is de versterker in staat van prachtig clean of funk naar heavy metal (oude metallica albums) te switchen en alles klinkt daarbij top. De EL84 tubes klinken super en de versterker heeft een erg strakke response. De versterker is precies en dynamisch en ik moest wel wat wennen. Ik ben erdoor wat preciezer gaan spelen en dit komt mijn techniek ten goede.
Waar ik ook aan moest wennen is het instellen van een juiste 'tone'. De gain structure van Mesa's is anders dan die van veel andere versterkers. De EQ zit verder voorin de gain structure, vergeleken met veel andere verrsterkers waardoor het niet zozeer een EQ is maar meer een soort gain shaping. Ik vermoed dat dit voor veel nieuwe gebruikers even wennen zal zijn.
Ik twijfelde tussen de 25 en 35 Watt uitvoering, maar ben tevreden met de keuze voor de grotere variant. De versterker heeft meer dan genoeg power en ook de solo boost geeft wat meer mogelijkheden. Ik weet niet of de 25 Watt variant ook voldoende was geweest.
Al met al ben ik erg tevreden en voldoet de versterker prima aan mijn wensen en doelen. Kwalitatief is het een prima versterker die robuust en solide aanvoelt. Ik heb de versterker nog niet lang genoeg om echt wat te zeggen over de kwaliteit, maar tot nu toe heb ik geen klachten. De CabClone heb ik nog niet gebruikt, dus daar heb ik (nog) geen oordeel over.
Als ik dan toch negatieve punten moet noemen, dan is dat de hoorbare (niet hinderlijk, maar toch) ventilator die niet uit te zetten is en het soms hoorbaar 'poppen' van de versterker bij het wisselen van modes/kanalen. Dit treedt meestal op als er veel volume of power verschil is tussen de kanalen. Als laatste vond ik het lastig om goede settings te vinden voor 'edge of breakup' tones. De clean en fat modes blijven lang clean en crunch heeft al snel veel gain. De edge mode van de grote broer mist hier, maar desalniettemin lukt het wel een prima lage gain sound te vinden.

Mesa has continued their glorious tradition by using four EL-84 power tubes in the amplifier, contrary to the earlier Mark Five Twenty-Five, that had to manage with 'only' two. This amp, preceded by the Nomad, Mini Rectifier Twenty-Five and the Caliber, has been released onto Mesa's mini platform in a combo as well as a head version.
