3 Tips for Fresh-Faced Acoustic Guitarists

Recently picked up your first acoustic guitar? Then it’s worth knowing that you can make more of your six-string when it comes to the sound, the tuning stability and even key changes. Here are three simple yet massively effective tips.

The Strings: Refresh Your Sound

Perhaps you’re feeling like the strings sounded better when you just got the guitar, or that the overall sound could do with a little more sparkle or fullness. In that case, you’ll want to take a closer look at the strings and see if you can spot any discolouration or detect spots where they feel a little rougher than they initially did. If so, it’s probably time to replace the strings. The strings that came pre-installed may have been slapped on quite a while ago, so this isn’t unusual – even with new guitars. Restringing an acoustic guitar isn’t hard and you’ll notice that a fresh set of strings not only boosts the sound, but make you more inclined to pick up your guitar and play a little every day.

A Tuner: No More Bum Tuning

Tuning up your guitar before you start plucking away at the strings is a good habit to develop. A guitar that sounds out of tune is not only less fun to play, but can be insufferable for anyone who’s listening to you play. Guitar tuners are available in various shapes and sizes. You can get a clip-on tuner, a pedal tuner, a tuner with a built-in metronome, a soundhole tuner…you name it. There’s a tuner for every imaginable situation.

A Capo: Quick-Shift to the Right Key

If you’ve got the open chords down but still struggle with barre chords, then a capo is a great tool for playing songs in different keys without the need for tricky barre chords. Changing the key can also make certain songs more suited for your vocal range, so having a capo lying around is always worth it.
