Published on Wednesday 10 January 2024
Welcome to the world of music production, where time is of utmost importance. In this fast-paced environment, being efficient is crucial, and Studio One provides a variety of tools to help you optimize your productivity. Follow guest blogger Mike Rosa as he reveals ten time-saving methods that will take your music production workflow to the next level.
#1. Templates for the Win
In Music production there are any number of boring repetitive tasks. Creating a template tailored to your preferred genre can save you precious minutes in the initial setup phase. Whether it’s a default instrument configuration or a preferred mix bus setup, having a template ready to go ensures you can dive straight into the creative process. Click the “+” sign on the start-up window to access the Templates dialogue box. Choose a pre-existing template or create your own under “USER”.
#2. Preferences: Doing It Your Way
The Preferences window may not be the sexiest thing in Studio One, but keep in mind that being unfamiliar with the Preferences page can slow you down. If you want Studio One to work a certain way, chances are it will – you just have to find the right Option setting and turn it on or off. Use the Ctrl/Cmd comma shortcut to access it and find the right option setting to customize the software. Otherwise, you may waste valuable time searching for features in the middle of a session.
#3. Optimize Buffer Size
Adjusting buffer size affects CPU performance. Whilst lower buffer size reduces latency it demands more processing power. The general rule is: use a lower buffer size for recording and a higher one for mixing. Press Ctrl/Cmd + “,” and click “Audio Setup” then Audio Device to adjust. Customize for different stages of production.
#4. Colour Coding Tracks: Enhance Visual Organisation
Visual organisation is key for a seamless workflow in any DAW. Studio One simplifies this by using the colour palette. Double-click on the far left-hand side of any track in the Track List or on the bottom of the corresponding mixer channel to assign unique colours to project elements. This colour-coded map ensures a visually organised workspace for easy navigation through your composition.
#5. Folder Tracks: Organize Your Chaos
To keep your session visually organized, you can use Folder Tracks to group related tracks. To create a folder track, click on the “Plus” sign at the top of the Track List and select “Folder”. Give it a name, choose a colour for it, and click ok to create it. Any tracks that are grouped in a folder will appear indented, making it easier for you to keep track of them.
#6. Keyboard Shortcuts: Your Sonic Hotkeys
As a music producer, mastering keyboard shortcuts in Studio One can significantly speed up your workflow. Check the Studio One manual to discover a plethora of keyboard shortcuts that cater to your unique needs. The “F7” shortcut for the Effects window and “F3” for showing/hiding the channel mixer are particularly useful.
#7. Track Inspector for Precision Editing
The Track Inspector in Studio One provides a detailed overview of your track. You can access it by pressing F4 or clicking on the “I” above the Track List. It has three sections for the track, mixer, and event, allowing for precise control over multiple parameters. Utilizing the Track Inspector saves time by providing quick access to essential functions.
#8. Macro Commands: Your Personal Assistant
Use Studio One macros to automate repetitive tasks. You can bundle multiple actions into a single command, saving time on routine tasks and focusing more on refining your creative vision. Access the macro organizer from the Studio One tab, just pick any one of the many macros and add your own shortcut key.
#9. Freeze Tracks for Instant Relief
If you’re experiencing high CPU usage while using complex virtual instruments or plugins, there’s a simple solution in Studio One. Just Right-click on the track header and select “Transform to Audio Track.” This will temporarily convert the track into an audio file, freeing up processing power without affecting your original arrangement.
#10. Chord Track Magic: Instant Harmonic Adjustments
Transpose an entire track with Studio One’s Chord track and introduce a new dimension to your creative process. Simply click the icon to activate it. The different follow options allow you to synchronize the chord track with various Midi and Audio parts. When set to “on,” it dynamically adjusts for non-destructive harmony, while toggling to “off” provides creative autonomy.
