PVC tape is normally used for electrical insulation, which is why it's often called insulation/insulating or electrical tape. An important property of the material used - polyvinyl chloride (PVC) - is that it's stretchable. This means it can be wrapped around cables very tightly for optimal insulation. It's also flame retardant, making it safe for electrical purposes. It has many other industrial applications too and is also good for sealing things.
