You can't get an early enough starting in playing music. Primary schools often support this creative skill, most commonly by giving children lessons in playing the recorder or a similar instrument. Another option - which might be more fun - is the Nino Percussion NINO951-MYO Make Your Own Cajon: a great construction kit for kids. This product has quite a few advantages. First off, playing the cajon (or indeed any other instrument) stimulates the brains and improves hand to eye coordination. Besides that, this construction kit will teach the children some technical skills, as they will have to build the cajon themselves. Of course, many children make their own things in arts and crafts lessons, but with this product, the child will also walk away with their very own musical instrument, instead of a lovely art project that will simply disappear in the back of the cupboard.
Once its built (and perhaps decorated with lacquer or paint with the included stencils), you can get the groove going. The cajon is an all-in-one percussive instrument, since it has equivalents to bass drum, hi-hat and snare drum sounds. That's part of the reason this instrument is so popular. It's almost a portable drum kit, and there are many interesting accessories for it. The combination of the Baltic birch body and the snare wires, gives the instrument a rich, versatile sound. Keep in mind: this cajon is certainly fun to play with, but it's so much more than a toy! Nino percussion is part of the Meinl company, an industry leading manufacturer of percussion instruments. While the Nino brand focuses on young children, they still produce full-fledged musical instruments.
Another thing that makes cajons so interesting, is the aforementioned array of accessories. There are, for instance, special mallets and brushes as an alternative to playing the cajon by hand. There are also several ways to further expand the cajon's tonal palette, by adding claves, castanets or bells, for instance. Finally, you can find many different kinds of bags, special cajon microphones and instructional books (with DVDs). Who knows? You might help your child or student to get a great new musical hobby!
