So, what classifies as drum hardware and what doesn't? As said, any parts of the drum kit that don't make sound are considered to be hardware. The only bit that's up for debate would be the drum throne since it can also be seen as a drum accessory, just like drumsticks. Cymbal stands have a relatively straightforward design. They're height-adjustable and can sometimes also be tilted for precise cymbal positioning. Hi-hat stands, on the other hand, are a little more complex. That's because hi-hats can be opened and closed at will with the help of a spring-loaded pedal.

Since they're pre-compiled packs, the hardware included usually comes from the same series, guaranteeing a 100% match in terms of finish, material, mounting and compatibility.

Shell-Mounting Options

Almost every manufacturer of drum hardware has developed their own shell mounting system to ensure optimum contact with the hardware. Pearl, for instance, uses the OptiMount system where the toms are mounted with the help of a special plate secured to the tension rods. A more affordable alternative to Pearl's system is a tom mount that’s secured to the top of the kick drum, though there are also drum racks that keep everything in place without having to mount anything on your kick. You also have the option to attach your toms to a cymbal stand. Meanwhile, snare drums are always mounted on a floor stand, while floor toms have legs of their own to stand on.

Drum Kit Pedals

Pedals are incredibly important parts of a drum kit. Besides the pedal-operated hi-hat stand we just mentioned, there's the bass drum pedal. Bass drum pedals feature a footplate that can be pressed to pull a chain or belt-drive system to activate a beater and make it slam into the bass drumhead. Bass drum pedals are also equipped with a spring so they return to the starting position after you lift your foot from the footplate.

Drum Throne

When it comes to an ergonomic set-up, a good drum throne can go a long way since it ensures a correct playing position. Drum thrones have either round or saddle seats - simply pick the type of seat that you find the most comfortable.

Other Drum Kit Parts

Tension rods, hoops, ventilation holes and bass drum legs are also considered to be drum hardware. The majority of these parts will come included with your drums as standard and can be replaced should they break.
