General
The Zoom H5 is a reliable handheld audio recorder that enables you to make excellent 1 to 4-channel audio recordings. The recorder is equipped with two XLR/jack inputs at the bottom, and features a stereo microphone on top: the XYH-5 capsule, a removable module that can be replaced by any other Zoom input capsule. Use, for instance, the separately available shotgun microphone - a hyper-directional mic for video purposes - or the practical XLR-TRS module, which expands the number of XLR/jack inputs of this battery-powered recorder to a total of four.
Zoom H5: connectors, SD and USB
The XLR and jack inputs of the Zoom H5 allow you to connect microphones as well as mixers or keyboards. If you want, you can send a stereo microphone or line signal to the 3.5mm input at the bottom of the microphone module. Your recordings can be stored on an SD card of up to 32 GB. Connect a pair of headphones to monitor your recordings, or transfer the audio to a device like a camera via the line output. The recorder can easily be mounted on a single-lens reflex camera or video camera by means of a separately available hot shoe mount, and thanks to its USB connector it can also serve as an audio interface for your PC or Mac.
Recording
The microphone features an impressive maximum SPL of 140 dB, which means the H5 can effortlessly handle exceptionally high volumes, such as a departing plane or a powerfully emoting vocalist at close range. Other remarkable features of the Zoom recorder include a compressor, a metronome and a chromatic tuner, not to mention the Auto Record function (which causes the H5 to start recording as soon as the sound reaches a specific level) and the exceptionally practical Backup Record function. Activate the latter and the H5 makes a backup recording at a level that is 12 dB lower than the primary recording, so you can simply use the backup if the main recording cannot be used due to clipping.
