Most speakers with more than one driver contain a built-in crossover. In a two-way system, for example, such a filter divides the frequencies, so that the tweeter can produce the high frequencies and the woofer can produce the low frequencies. This reduces distortion and prevents damage. An external active crossover allows you to accurately determine the frequency ranges for different drivers and woofers, so they can be amplified separately.
