A directional microphone is often contained inside what's known as a blimp. The combination of a sturdy, zeppelin-shaped housing, a shock mount and a wind shield prevents the microphone from capturing unwanted noise caused by wind. The blimp leaves the original audio characteristics intact due to the space it leaves around the mic while covering it. The exterior of the blimp is often covered in a (removable) layer of synthetic fur, designed to disperse the wind.
