Is Akai going to the Dark Side with the new MPC Studio?
While everyone was focussing on the Akai MPC Touch during NAMM 2016, a Music Production Controller was also quietly released in the background. Known in some circles as the Black MK2, this MIDI controller features a few nice points of improvement on the MPC Studio. A 2.0 version of the MPC software was also released at the same time and comes included with the controller.
So, what's new?
The first thing you'll notice about Akai's MPC Studio Black MK2 is the stylish black finish. The housing is made of brushed aluminium, and in addition to the distinctive pads, the controller also has six rotary knobs. The largest knob has been borrowed from the Renaissance, and the you'll find that the remaining five knobs on the left-hand side are now much easier to grip and control. Furthermore, 16 GB worth of samples, sounds and effects comes with the controller—a feature that has contributed to a slightly thicker 1.5" (38 mm) MIDI studio controller. Despite the thicker model it's still super easy to transport, especially thanks to the handy case that comes with it. If you want to get your hands on this new controller, keep a look out for it when it's released March, and expect to pay about the same price as you would have for its predecessor.
What's included?
We already know that the controller will come with the new MPC Software 2.0. The graphic interface has been revamped to make it easier to record and control your audio tracks and streaming. Everything has been designed around the goal of making the process as intuitive as possible, and that means that you can add both audio and MIDI files in your DAW by simply dragging and dropping the files. You'll also find that the Q-Link Control has been improved to be easier to work with. All in all, this new software will make producing your own tracks much simpler.
