Musikmesse 2016: The Zoom U-44 and U-24 - Size Matters
Zoom surprised both friend and foe with their H1 Handy mobile recorder series, which was very well-received by the general public. Now, Zoom has introduced two audio interfaces, the U-44 and the U-24, two recorders that fit in the palm of your hand! We're talking ultra compact. That doesn't mean their performance is small, however. Quite the contrary is true, in fact!
Modest and powerful: Zoom makes it so
The U-44 and U-24 are extremely complete interfaces that feature, among other things, two combined XLR/jack inputs. These are equipped with 48-volt phantom power for your condenser microphones. They also feature a Hi-Z mode so you can record high-impedance instruments at line level. In other words, you will no longer need a D.I. or preamp to boost the signal. You'll also find a jack TRS input and an RCA output on both units as well as a MIDI input and output to hook up your controllers.
Interchangeable capsules
Another important feature of these Zoom recorders are that fact that their capsules are interchangeable. That means you can replace them with other separately-available capsules for a different tone colour or directional characteristic. The flagship model of the line, the U-44, has a built-in microphone which means it can be used as a stand-alone unit. The preamps are of excellent quality and ensure the audio source is captured accurately and naturally. Both audio interfaces come with Ableton Live Lite 9.
