Technics Announces the Return of the SL-1200 - SL-1200G + SL-1200GAE
2016 has only just begun, but is already showing remarkable promise... All the signs are there, and they're not just rumours this time. In fact, Technics has officially announced the return of the holy grail of turntablism to the shops. That's right, the SL-1200 is back! Yesterday, during the CES 2016, Technics revealed that there will be two new editions of the renowned turntable: the SL-1200G and the limited edition SL-1200GAE. This news will certainly have its effects on the NAMM 2016. We, for one, can't wait to see how the attending manufacturers and the DJ community in general will respond.
SL-1200G + SL-1200GAE: features
As we mentioned before, Technics has announced two different new versions of the classic SL-1200 turntable. First of all, there's the SL-1200G that, featuring an aluminium and brass platter with a rubber finish, doesn't just look incredibly sleek, but is also remarkably rugged. Technics has stated that this model - like its predecessors - has been developed with hifi lovers in mind, but the manufacturer must have been well aware that the entire DJ community was holding its breath when they issued their news.
The SL-1200G is everything we'd expect from a Technics product. At the heart of this new turntable is a powerful direct-drive motor, ensuring a lightning-quick start time. Additionally, a number of new improvements make the SL-1200G more stable than ever, preventing cogging - tiny fluctuations in motor speed and vibrations that may have an undesired effect on your sound. A system of micro processors and sensors ensures that any other possible vibrations are quickly registered and eliminated, so you're able to enjoy your records in optimal quality.
The SL-1200GAE promises to be a truly exceptional turntable. This special limited edition was designed to commemorate Technics's 50th anniversary, and only 1,200 will be issued world-wide, each sporting a numbered 'limited edition' badge. Unlike the SL-1200G, which has an aluminium tonearm, the SL-1200GAE comes equipped with a magnesium tonearm.
Will 2016 see the official return of vinyl?
In 2010, Technics reported that they would cease the production of the SL-1200. Since then, they have had to put up with a persistent community that was keen to ascertain whether the classic turntable would ever be up for a reissue. When Panasonic announced that the Technics brand would be revived, naturally the hype increased, and after years of eager anticipation, the moment is finally here. The SL-1200 is not just making an official comeback, it actually boasts a number of enhancements that make the turntable more stable, reducing noise to a minimum - apart from the characteristic sound of your vinyl, of course!
Outstanding! How do I buy a set?
To be honest, we didn't see Technics' latest news coming, which means that right now we cannot give you any definite details about prices, availability and delivery times. Of course, we'll do our very best to ascertain and share this information with you as soon a possible. Are you just as curious as we are to find out what you'll have to do to get your hands on one (or two) of those limited edition models? Make sure you keep an eye on this page!
For now, we can tell you that the SL-1200GAE will be available first, and will be issued in the summer. The SL-1200G will hit the shelves later, towards the end of 2016.
