General

James Neligan has added this acoustic Firkin cigar box guitar to their Cask series. It has a solid spruce body, a mahogany neck and a rosewood bridge and fretboard. It's an affordable 4-string guitar with a tasteful Sunburst finish that can even be used as a travel guitar. You can either tune it to the four thinnest strings of a standard guitar, or choose an open tuning in D, G or C. The Firkin is a unique acoustic cigar box with eye-catching spade-shaped sound holes that is sure to inspire you and suit any mood you happen to be in!

Wrote the following about James Neligan Firkin Acoustic Cigar Box 4-string cigar box guitar

Dit instrument oogt echt heel mooi. Goed afgewerkt, geen scherpe fretuiteinden. De snaren liepen echter niet mooi parallel met de hals, wel goed bespeelbaar, maar toch. Dat loste ik op door het staartstuk twee millimeter te verplaatsen. In de beschrijving staat "massief sparren" bovenblad, maar op dat massieve bovenblad is wel een dunne mahonie triplex gelijmd. Dus het gaat eigenlijk om een combinatie tussen massief en gelamineerd. Nooit eerder gezien, maar het werkt!! De gitaar klinkt absoluut NIET als een triplex doos. Ik ben positief verrast over het volume en de sustain van deze kleine klankkast. We mogen niet vergeten dat een standaard akoestische gitaar waarschijnlijk vijf keer meer volume heeft qua klankkast, maar zeker niet qua geluidssterkte. Wat de klank op zich betreft, ook weer positief verrast. Natuurlijk klinkt deze gitaar lo-fi, bluesy, boxy, maar daarvoor is ze nou net gemaakt. Anders speel je gewoon op jouw standaard akoestische gitaar toch? Het "Ace of spades" klankgat is qua afmetingen geschikt om een pickup in te plaatsen en maakt alles af. Maar voor mij is de klank en de sustain van deze gitaar toch het meest indrukwekkend. Uiteindelijk gaat het er toch om hoe je muziek klinkt.
