The woodblock is a type of slit drum that packs a short, high-pitched sound. While traditionally made of wood, woodblocks are also available in a less sensitive, more affordable plastic form and can be played with a special beater to lay down rhythms. From orchestras to pop bands and jazz outfits, this unique yet popular percussion instrument can take on almost any task and is often combined with other percussion instruments. Woodblocks are also superb substitutes for cowbells.
Playing a woodblock is fairly straightforward. You can either hold it in your hand or, if supported, you can mount it onto a stand or secure it to a drum. It can then be played with a drumstick or a purpose-made beater.
