Designed to keep the signal balanced and free from noise and interference, a DI box can be a life-saver for gigging guitarists. Read on to find out how a DI box can help you send a clean, balanced signal from your instrument to your mixer, recorder or PA system.

What's a DI Box?

DI box is short for direct injection box. This handy tool for musicians and sound technicians takes the signal of a high-impedance instrument such as an electric guitar, bass or keyboard and turns it into a balanced, low-impedance signal fit for use in combination with long cables and mixing desks.

Active and Passive DI Boxes

DI boxes are split into active and passive models. Passive DI boxes don't require any power supply and are generally cheaper than active units. The downside of passive DI boxes is that they're sometimes unable to provide the signal-boosting power needed for bridging (extremely) long distances. Active DI boxes, on the other hand, are equipped with a built-in amplifier and generally pack more power, making them more suited for use with pro-grade audio and PA systems. Instead of mains power, some active DIs can even run on phantom power supplied by powered mixers.

Single-Channel or Multi-Channel

Before you grab any DI box, it's important to think about the number of channels you might need. Some DI boxes are single-channel units, while other models feature multiple channels. If you play more than one instrument during gigs, a multi-channel DI box would probably be your best bet.

Hooking Up a DI Box

The inputs and outputs are another thing to consider. Most DI boxes are fitted with standard jack ports for plugging in instruments, but some models also have XLR ports which are great if you want to work with balanced signals and reduce noise or interference.

With a DI box, you can reduce noise and interference as well as boost your signal before it's amplified or recorded, resulting in higher sound quality.
