The Xdirect DI Box
The Art DUALXDirect active interface can be set up to prepare and send an instrument, line or amplified signal to a mixer via an isolation transformer. Due to a broad yet flat frequency response, the signal is passed on with neutral clarity, and no colouring. Using the input attenuator, the input strength can be adjusted, so this box can be set up to handle any signal, and to counter hum and noise, both the input and output grounding can be isolated.

Het circuit blijkt nl. conform het blokschema van de stereoversie te zijn (afgezien van de schakelmogelijkheden en natuurlijk mono), zie: http://artproaudio.com/files/owners_manuals/om_dualxdirect.pdf
Er vindt dus géén omzetting plaats van ongebalanceerd naar gebalanceerd maar slechts buffering.
Bij een gebalanceerde uitgang zou op pen 2 t.o.v. pen 1 het halve signaal staan, evenzo, maar dan in tegenfase, op pen 3 t.o.v. pen 1, zodat tussen 2 en 3 het volledige signaal staat.
Dat is hier alleen het geval als het signaal ook gebalanceerd wordt aangeboden, zie bovenvermeld blokschema.
Bij een òngebalanceerd ingangsignaal staat op de uitgang het volledige signaal op pen 2, terwijl er op pen 3 géén signaal staat t.o.v. pen 1 (bij ingeschakelde 'phase invert' is dit andersom). Het uitgangsignaal blijft dus ongebalanceerd, het enige is dat pen 3 en pen 1 niet direct doorverbonden zijn.
Ook is de beschrijving wat misleidend als er over "isolatie transformer" gesproken wordt, er is géén trafo aanwezig, er wordt alleen gebruik gemaakt van wat actieve componenten in een emittervolger schakeling. Zodoende is er dus ook geen galvanische scheiding tussen in- en uitgang indien 'ground lift' geactiveerd wordt.
De audiokwaliteit is verder goed, het mist alleen een belangrijke DI-functie: omzetting ongebalanceerd -> gebalalanceerd.
In feite is het slechts een gebalanceerde buffer met wat opties.
