Beaters are generally used for playing melodic and tuned percussion instruments. They have rather thin shafts made of wood, rattan or fibreglass and are equipped with a head. Unwound heads are used for instruments with a more durable surface, such as xylophones, and are generally made of a hard material. Wrapped heads are usually made of a softer material and are mainly used for instruments such as the marimba and the vibraphone but for the xylophone as well.
