For playing the timpani - or kettledrums - you'll need timpani mallets. Their shafts are typically made of hardwood or bamboo and have a wooden head wrapped with felt. Although wood usually provides a deeper tone, nowadays we’re seeing more and more lightweight shafts made of graphite or aluminium. These sticks have a more comfortable feel and are more durable. The sound, however, is mainly influenced by the shape, weight and material of the head. For instance, a smaller head produces a sharper sound, and a head with a felt core provides a softer tone.
