Snare drums have two batter heads: one upper head and one at the bottom. Snare drum batter heads are used for the top of the snare drum. The batter head is the head that you strike with drum sticks and can be single-layered or double-layered. Single ply snare drum batter heads have a lively sound and a sensitive response, whereas double-ply heads (which have a longer lifespan) produce a much fatter sound with a more audible attack and shorter sustain. Besides batter heads, we also offer resonant heads.
There are various factors that affect the sound of a batter head. You can reduce unwanted overtones with a dampening ring, tape or a small damper pad. Some drumheads even have a dot placed in the middle which eliminates unwanted resonance and overtones. Coated drum heads produce a warmer sound and their surfaces work nicely with brushes. Finally, you can tune the drumhead completely by ear or in with the help of a drum tuner.
