General
The medium-weight Remo Fiberskyn 3 Ambassador drum head is made of a 10-mil layer of Mylar and even though it's officially designed to be used as a battering head, you won't get into trouble if you want to use it as a resonance head. The single-ply head is equipped with a special coating made from Polyspun fibres, which makes it look much more like a traditional drum head. The Polyspun coating gives the Ambassador 3 its warm, earthy sound with deep attack and splendid sustain. It's also suitable for use with brushes, making it interesting for jazz drummers in particular. With a 14-inch diameter, this battering drum head will fit a snare or a floor tom.

Met dit vel krijg ik niet het geluid wat ik wens, maar dat is misschien ook een kwestie van smaak. Het vel heeft een zeer lichte of gedempte resonantie. Het geluid is hierdoor wat lafjes. Wat nog vervelender is is dat de toplaag losraakt in het midden van het vel precies waar je met je stok slaat. Kheb nu dus een dubbel vel! Maar snel vervangen.

Dit is een super Jazz vel. Ik heb het op een houten snare zitten, heerlijk klassiek geluid. Ik heb vroeger nog op echte vellen gespeeld, dit komt vrij goed in de buurt van dat oude gevoel. Evenaren? Nee, dat niet, maar je hebt ook de nadelen niet van een kalfsvel, dat erg omgevingsgevoelig is en makkelijker scheurt. Het ziet er ook mooi uit. Brushes geven hier een fantastisch resultaat op.

Sinds kort heb ik deze vel op mijn jazz snare. Met brushes geeft het een erg mooi geluid, niet zo'n schuurpapier gekras zoals bij een standaard gecoat bovenvel.
Als je de snare gedeelte uitschakel krijg je een soort van percussie geluid. Mooi rond van klank en warm.
