TC Electronic's Brainwaves is a studio-quality pitch shifter with an innovative touch-sensitive footswitch. It features different algorithms including polyphonic pitch-shifting, whammy-style octave up and detune. There are two independent voices that allow you to choose harmonies (unison) or extreme 2-octave bends. The Brainwaves also features the revolutionary MASH switch that can be assigned to any parameter on this effects pedal giving you ultimate control.
Brainwaves Pitch Shifter: easy to use
Unlike many other pitch-shifters, TC Electronic have ensured that the Brainwaves is easy to use. Choosing your desired effect type and adjusting the two voices couldn't be any simpler. You can also make use of the free TonePrint editor to easily create your own sounds and there are three slots on the pedal for you to save them on. Two inputs and outputs means the Brainwaves can handle stereo signals too. Finally, in addition to true bypass, you can also choose buffered bypass to ensure the quality of the signal when you're using long cables.

De mogelijkheid om instellingen met de Toneprint Editor aan te passen is heel erg fijn. Ik zorg ervoor dat ik mijn favoriete toneprint instelling heb met de knoppen op 12 uur.
Bij de Brainwaves zijn alleen de mix-knop en de mash-knop aan te passen in de toneprint editor. Daarnaast zijn er nauurtlijk nog aanpassingen te doen aan het geluid zelf. Hier moet ik nog even goed gaan zoeken naar wat voor mij de juiste geluiden oplevert. Op toneprint 1 komt in ieder geval een pitch effect en op toneprint 2 een detune effect. De veel bejubelde mashfunctie is voor mij minder interessant.
Het basisgeluid van de Brainwaves is precies wat ik verwachtte. Logisch ook want ik ben al in het bezit van de SupnUp. Als ik ze allebei aanheb dan komt er enorme massa aan geluid uit mijn versterker in plaats van één toontje. Leuk.
Voordeel van de TC Electronic pedalen is naast de stevige bouw de toneprint editor. Op youtube is veel te vinden over het werken met de toneprint editor en dat is wel nodig want het aantal mogelijkheden is enorm. Voor mij is het vooral uitproberen en nog eens uitproberen. Een goede omscrijving van wat elke instelling precies doet zou wel wenselijk zijn.
Nadeel van de TC Electronic pedalen is het hoge stroomgebruik. Elk pedaal gebruikt ongeveer 100mA (zowel aan als uit) dus een krachtige voeding is wel nodig.
Ik vind het jammer dat er geen linux versie van de toneprint editor is.
Ook merk ik dat de pedalen het geluid enigszins kleuren. Het geluid wordt wat metaliger. Dat geldt ook als de pedalen uitgeschakeld zijn. Omdat ik vijf TC Electronic pedalen heb is dit effect duidelijk aanwezig. Voor mijn theremin niet zo erg maar soms gebruik ik het pedalboard ook voor mijn gitaar en dan vind ik het wat storender. Omdat ik de corona, de flashback en de hall of fame altijd aan heb staan bij mijn theremin verwacht ik dat ik nog wel wat kan doen met toneaanpassing in de toneprints.
Kortom, de Brainwaves is een prima pedaal voor mij.
