The USB connector has been around since 1995 and has been enhanced a few times since then. With each new version, USB 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 and now 3.0, the transfer speed has increased. It's important to know that older USB devices will always work when plugged into a newer USB port (although the transfer speed will remain the same).
