General

Partly due to Jack White of the White Stripes, it is becoming ever more popular to play a distinctively shaped vintage guitar. The National MAP is one of those unique models from the fifties and sixties, with a shape that was based on that of the map of the United States (hence its name). This black Eastwood Airline MAP DLX is a modern reissue of the 1962 model with the same distinctive looks but a massively improved construction. You can now re-live the sixties at a fraction of the price of an original MAP Res-O-Glass.

Eastwood Airline MAP DLX: new mahogany construction

The Airline MAP DLX has a mahogany body with sound chambers that increases the resonance and gives it a fuller, richer tone than the original two-part fibreglass body. Its hollow insides give it the same unique open sound and light weight but is now much more rugged and durable. For a delightfully bright bite, this guitar was fitted with a maple neck that features a rosewood fretboard with 22 frets and elegant pearloid block inlays. Its relatively short scale length of 24.75 inches makes the Eastwood Airline MAP surprisingly smooth to play.

Hardware and electronics

The Airline MAP DLX by Eastwood is equipped with two Alnico Hot-10 humbucker pickups that produce a full, rich, clear sound in all three positions, despite their high output. A 3-position pickup switch, a volume control per pickup and a master tone offer a wide range of sounds. This guitar's bridge is a Tune-O-Matic with roller saddles. Combined with the Bigsby tremolo, this bridge allows you to create wild vibrato effects without jeopardising the guitar's tuning. To fully complete the picture, this guitar has a National-style pickguard with the characteristic striping.
