Three-Way & Five-Way Guitar Pickup Switches
Usually, a guitar loaded with two pickups will have a three-way pickup switch while a guitar loaded with three pickups will have a five-way pickup switch. These switches are the most common, but there are two different versions of the three-way switch: the blade-switch that Fender fit almost all of their Telecasters with, and the three-way toggle switch that Gibson fit all of their classic Les Paul and SG models with. While the number of pickups usually dictates the kind of switch (so three-way or five-way), the kind of pickups doesn't, so it doesn't matter if your guitar has single-coils, humbuckers, P90s or something else.
Different Guitar Pickup Switches
Besides three-way and five-way switches, you can also get four-way switches or even switches with more than five settings to support extra tonal versatility. A good example is what's referred to as a Super Switch for humbuckers, which doesn't just activate full dual-coil-sound, but when matched with four-wire humbuckers can split the coils down the middle for a single-coil-style sound. Another popular switch mod among Tele players is to couple a four-way switch with a pair of single-coils, which can be flipped to combine both pickups and create a humbucker-style sound to widen the sonic palette.
