Audio Technica's AT4040 condenser microphone is part of their 40 series. These microphones are warm, powerful, bright and sensitive. With a wide dynamic range and high SPL, this mic is highly versatile. It excels in the studio, even with digital recording systems but is equally at home on the stage. Vocals, instruments and sound effects, the AT4040 does it all.
Audio Technica AT4040: technical precision
The R&D department at Audio Technica spent 10 years developing the AT4040. It's no surprise, therefore, to learn that it combines technical precision with everything the modern artist demands. It works without a transformer to prevent low-frequency noise, while its symmetrical, open design minimises reverberation within the mic itself. The acoustic element is made with precision from nickel-plated brass for greater stability and sensitivity.
A complete package
The microphone comes with the AT8449 shock mount for superior isolation and a secure attachment to a mic stand. A dust cover is also included, as is the R1 foam-lined box so that you can transport the mic safely.

Mijn oog viel na wat onderzoek op de AT4040, of toch de gedoodverfde favoriet en in de metal alomaanwezige Shure SM7B. De oplossing? Een shootout - ofwel shoutout. Daaruit bleek dat de SM7B een prima mic is, maar voor mijn stem toch niet ideaal. De mic boost een aantal frequenties in mijn stem die niet al te aangenaam zijn. De AT4040 daarentegen lijkt diezelfde frequenties juist wat te temmen, waardoor mijn vocalen vrijwel direct mixklaar zijn. Bovendien is de AT kraakhelder en complimenteert die mijn screams zodanig dat ze zo vol klinken als ze zijn.
De AT4040 is een echte alleskunner, van de zachtste fluister tot het hardste gekrijs komt helder binnen en de microfoon reageert erg goed op eq, compressie en eventuele effecten. Mijn clean zang klinkt nog steeds voor geen meter, maar dat ligt zeker niet aan de AT4040, want aan de opnamekwaliteit is niets op te merken. Mensen die juist voor clean zang of voice overs op zoek zijn naar een goede microfoon, kunnen aan deze zeker geen buil vallen.
In de shootout heb ik trouwens ook de goedkopere AT2020 meegenomen, maar die viel direct af door zijn schrale en erg dunne geluid in het algemeen. Beter iets meer uitgeven en gelijk voor perfectie dus, in mijn geval. Met deze microfoon kan ik weer heel wat jaren vooruit.
