The different heights in the acoustic Studiofoam Metro products serve to direct sonic energy out into a time domain, and also absorb a slightly different part of the frequency spectrum. This is because it takes time for the sound waves to travel through the different sections of the Metro, and that is different for each section. The sound waves hit the mounting surface and travel through the Metro back into space, softening wavefronts rather than merely absorbing them.

This is why a 2-inch Studiofoam Metro room will retain more "feel" than a room treated with a stronger acoustic absorber such as 3-inch or 4-inch Studiofoam Wedges or Pyramids.
