The Thomastik PJ116 John Pearse Folk is a string set for acoustic steel-string and classical guitars. These strings combine the clarity of steel strings with the low tension of nylon strings. As they have a low tension, they're the perfect option if traditional steel strings tire your fingers. Thomastik's PJ116 strings are also perfect for classical guitars, if you want them to have an extra bit of steel-string clarity, that is.

Thomastik PJ116 John Pearse: unique combination of steel and nylon

One of the unique features of this string set is that all the strings are wound. Like on a classical guitar, the three bass strings (E, A and D) are made of a nylon core wound with silver-plated brass. The cores of the G and B strings are made of Thomastik's special Rope Core, which consists of nylon fibres and woven steel strands. Around the Rope Core is a flat nylon winding (tapewound). The thin E string is also tapewound, but around a steel core.

For folk and classical guitars

The main advantage of the Thomastik PJ116s' construction is that they have a lower string tension than conventional steel strings, which means that you can use them for classical/Spanish guitars or other (older) guitars without a truss rod and/or weak bracing. Thanks to the nylon core of the bass strings, the bass is less accentuated than that of traditional steel strings, making the Thomastik PJ116 a perfect string set for folk-style finger picking, for instance.
