Celemony Melodyne 4 Editor pitch/timing correction software

Peter Neubäcker, developer and founder of Melodyne, managed to make the impossible possible by creating software that allows the user to adjust individual tones in polyphonic audio material. He calls his success 'DNA', which stands for Direct Note Access. The Editor and Studio versions are the only editions of Melodyne 4 that are equipped with this advanced technology. Also new in version 4 are even more precise tempo and tone recognition and an entirely spruced-up interface.

Monophony and Polyphony

Even the most straightforward versions of the Melodyne 4 software allow you to edit the pitch, timing and volume of tones within single-layer audio material. That means, a perfect take won't be ruined by one little mistake or impurity! From the Editor version upwards, however, it's possible to adjust tones within multi-layered tracks (such as an acoustic guitar part). Did your guitarist strike an E major instead of E minor? You can go in and correct that one note in the wink of an eye. What's more, the Editor edition allows you to adjust the tempo progression of a track and add alternative scales.

How Melodyne works

Start by importing one or more audio tracks (vocals, instruments, percussion, etc.) into Melodyne as a stand-alone, or use the program as a plugin in your DAW. The software then detects each tone's pitch, length and volume of the audio track(s) with great accuracy, and presents them in a clear overview. You will immediately be able to see which tones are out of tune or not timed well, and the software can automatically correct them. A big benefit of Melodyne's software is that you can also adjust everything by hand for an even more natural-sounding (or creative) result.
