Vocoder

Vocoders have been invented to distort vocals. The effect can create a robot-like result, for instance, or simulate a group of people singing. The Electro Harmonix V256 vocoder produces those familiar robot sounds and is also capable of producing harmonies.

It's like your voice has been processed by a synthesizer, and the outcome is anything but conventional! The V256 is equipped with a Reflex Tune feature - a popular pitch corrector - to boot. You'll recognise the characteristic auto-tune sound from the work of popular artists such as T-Pain, Flo-rida, Chris Brown and Taio Cruz.

The pedal

The familiar die-cast housing and the stylish design instantly reveal that you're dealing with an Electro Harmonix pedal. A Mode button allows you to select the effect you'd like to work with, and you can tweak that basic sound using the other controls.

The pedal features its own phantom power, which can be switched on and off at will, depending on whether you're working with a condenser microphone or a dynamic model. By plugging in a guitar or other instrument, you activate the modulation. The Vocoder requires both your vocal input and another signal - the instrument signal ensures that your vocals are processed using the electronics of the Vocoder, resulting in the eventual synth-like sound.

When it comes to vocoders, the Electro Harmonix V256 is truly within a league of its own.
