What’s the Best Guitar Stand for Me?
A guitar stand is a purpose-made floor stand that’s set up to hold an acoustic, an electric or a bass guitar. In this Buyer’s Guide, we help you decide what kind of guitar stand best matches you and your instrument. If your question isn’t included, don’t hesitate to contact us!
1. Do I Really Need a Guitar Stand?
Whether or not you need a guitar or bass guitar stand depends on what you’re planning to do with your instrument. If you’re only going to be playing at home, a guitar hanger (also known as a guitar wall mount) might do the trick for you.
If you don’t plan on playing your guitar that often, it might be worth picking up a guitar case or bag instead. With one of these, the instrument won’t get covered in dust while it’s tucked away.
If you play a lot of gigs or frequently rehearse, having a place to park your guitar can be quite handy. That’s where a guitar stand comes in. In this case, a foldable model is probably the best. Either way, guitar stands can also be used around the house (see Question 2).

2. Can I Use a Guitar Stand at Home?
Absolutely. A guitar stand not only allows you to give your guitar or bass pride of place in the living room, but makes sure you don’t have to drill any holes in the wall.
However, before you set up your instrument in the living room, note that it’s probably better to hang your guitar on a purpose-made wall mount if you live with an excited dog or an adventurous toddler. This advice applies to cats as well, since you wouldn’t want your guitar to serve as a cat tree.
3. Can I Place Multiple Guitars on a Single Stand?
Yes, you can. There are various stands available that can be used to store multiple guitars or basses. These so-called multi-guitar stands are great on-stage accessories that enable you to change guitars in between songs. Most models are also collapsible for easy transport. What you will have to bear in mind here is that electric guitars are generally much thinner than acoustics, which means that multi-guitar stands usually support fewer acoustic models than they do electric guitars. To make sure it offers all the room you need, always read the product description and specifications of any stand you might want to buy.

4. Does Any Guitar or Bass Fit Any Guitar Stand?
- While the majority of the guitar stands that we sell are universal models that are able to take most acoustic, electric and bass guitars, there are always a few exceptions.
- Due to their shape or design, certain stands are specifically made for either electric or acoustic guitars. This is always indicated on the product page.
- Some floor-model stands are designed to hold your guitar like a wall hanger. With this kind of stand, it’s important that the headstock of your guitar is wide enough to be supported.
- Finally, there are the more unique body shapes of models like the Flying V. When it comes to especially pointy or oddly shaped guitars, see if you can find a floor stand that’s designed to suspend the guitar by gripping it at the base of the headstock, or a model that was purpose-made to match your guitar. To make sure no part of the guitar touches the ground, it’s important that the height can be adjusted. Additional anti-slip surfaces are also a recommended feature since these prevent the guitar from sliding out of the stand.

5. Is There Anything Else I Should Keep in Mind?
- If you have an 8-string or a 9-string guitar, or any other model with a wide neck, make sure that the neck support of the stand is wide enough to support your instrument.
- When it comes to the soft padding your guitar rests on, foam is better than rubber. Rubber isn’t harmful per se, but some guitarists feel like rubber wears down faster than foam.
- Some stands feature a collapsible tripod. For maximum stability, always make sure the tripod base is fully extended.
- Found the perfect guitar stand for you? Always read the product description and specifications to see if there’s anything special you need to keep in mind.
