Children around six/seven years old usually benefit from a smaller, 1/4-size violin. This Scarlatti VL 1/4 is a pleasantly priced instrument, for parents who are not yet sure whether the violin is a good choice for their child. Interestingly, the Scarlatti VL is also very complete: it is equipped with fine tuners and comes with a violin case and bow. The sound box is made of solid spruce and solid maple wood.
The size 1/4 is suitable for children with an arm length of about 48 cm. You measure this from the middle of the palm to the neck, directly below the jaw. The hand should now be able to fold comfortably around the curl, with the fingers pointing to the face and the elbow very slightly bent. If in doubt between two sizes, it is best to take the smaller of the two. By the way, 1/4 does not mean that this violin is four times smaller than a normal 4/4 violin; the difference is much smaller.
