General
Dynamics bring music to life. They express emotion, and likewise, control the emotion of your audience, whether you're whipping up a nice blues solo or playing heavy metal. It stands to reason that unintentional dynamics can ruin everything. Everything! Not to worry though, that's where compression comes into play. Compression softens loud dynamics and vice versa, to bring some uniformity to the entire mix. That is to say, the main role of a compressor is to give every note the same volume.
Have you noticed, perhaps, that some of the strings on your guitar or bass are louder than the others? That happens because lighter strings don't produce as much volume as the heavier strings. When used properly though, a compressor will take care of this, so all of your strings have the same volume. Compressors are also great for bass slapping, because those thumb slaps, string pulls and muted notes all deserve to be heard equally!
You can always adjust your compression with the attack and sustain controls, and you can use the level knob to subtly adjust the output, or to give the volume a big boost. Finally, with the tone button, you can set the harmonies up exactly how you like them.
