General

When Acid was released back in 1998 - still under the flag of Sonic Foundry - it quickly became immensely popular. In a world where compositions were always based on MIDI, it introduced a way of working with beats and loops on an audio level. Drum loops, percussion loops, bass loops - all were automatically adjusted to the tempo of the project. Magix, which is now the owner of Sonic Foundry's software, is dedicated to keeping Acid up to its high standard, and Magix' Acid Music Studio 10 audio editing software is the latest addition to the Acid family. Acid Music Studio 10 has all the features that made previous generations so effective and adds a number of interesting new ones.

New in Magix Acid Music Studio 10

The signal quality has been improved significantly: provided your sound card or audio interface supports it, you can work at an impressive level of 24-bit/192 kHz. This edition of the software enables you to assign effect chains to an audio event instead of to an entire audio track. That means you can cut up a recording of a rapper, for example, and apply a lo-fi effect to certain parts, such as the chorus. It is also possible to move a group of events on the timeline as a single unit, which is particularly useful if you're working on larger arrangements. Controlling softsynths (VSTi) is part of the possibilities as well, and you can even create a drum key map to link specific drum sounds to specific keys.

Get started instantly

Acid is a fast and inspiring package if you're a fan of loops and beats. Once you've prepared your loops and other audio material using your preferred software, you can get to work in Acid to create some proper tunes. In a way, Acid's method of operation resembles that of Ableton, another package that allows you to quickly create tracks using a large top-down overview. What should you do, though, if you're not able to create your own source material? First of all, don't panic! Magix has included a nice collection of loops - a staggering total of 3,000 - for you to work with. As soon as your music production is finished, Acid allows you to publish the results of your labour directly via Soundcloud - another great new function of this 10th edition of the Magix audio editing software.
