General

Already issued in 1979, the Maxon OD808 was one of the first pedals to emulate a tube amplifier overdrive. The circuit that Maxon designed for this pedal is the most used, imitated and praised overdrive circuit ever! It produces a smooth, creamy, yet exceptionally natural and mild crunch that retains the original character of your guitar marvellously. There's really only one choice for those who are looking for classic '70s overdrive sounds..

The secret to the natural OD808 overdrive

The Maxon OD-808 overdrive (which you can also use as clean boost) owes its natural sound to omission of a clipping section. Its distortion comes from the amplifier section of the pedal. This important feature, just like the rest of the design, comes straight from the original OD808. Only the strong static sensitivity that plagued the older models is a thing of the past for this re-issue version.

Maxon's high-quality effects

Maxon started out as a manufacturer of guitar pickups, yet made their way to fame with high-quality innovative effect pedals. The company is responsible for the legendary TS-808 and TS9 Tube Screamers that were issued in the seventies under the Ibanez brand name. Today, Maxon specialises in vintage effects - including the highly coveted analogue delays and classic overdrives. Many professional guitarists use Maxon pedals.

Original Tube Screamer. Maxon was making this pedal before Ibanez and than when they have became famous in Japan Maxon started making pedals for Ibanez. All Ibanez pedals where rebadged Maxon pedals. This is a TS808 Dad.
Better priced than Ibanez and you are getting same quality/product.
Great solo boost for amplifiers with lot of bottom end. It cuts true the mix.
Familiar sound.
It keeps some of the original sound in the mix.
Works great with OD Channels of amps when amp is on verge of break up.
Works great when stacking gain with other pedals (not all and asks for some setup knowledge)
Mid hump

Not for every amplifier. For example it is great for Fender amps but not so good for amps that have weak bottom end. On such amps it sounds thin.
It not for home use on bedroom levels. It likes to boost already breaking amp. It likes working in the band and on high levels.
Not that versatile due "low gain". This is not a Metal thing.
Can be set up wrong and sound bad. Maximum gain is not it's thing.
Mid hump

So i you get one do not discard it until you have tried all of the possibilities like all settings and before and after other boost pedals. It is a Classic.
BTW when used with cranked Fender Amp it is a Steve Ray Vaughn sound. He used TS808 and TS-9 and TS-10. Remember he have had very thick strings and Stratocaster. So no mid in guitar and no mids in amp. Green pedal gave him what he have missed. Due the fact that he have had lot of bass even after green pedal he have had enough bass in the mix.
But if you play at low level and on flat EQ amp you are better of with a BD-2 when you are after a SRV sound disregarding that he have not used it. BR-2 and bassy amp would be bad muddy at high level and in the Band environment though.
