General
With the DJM-S9, Pioneer offer a modern love letter to their classic (and sadly out of production) DJM-707 and DJM-909 mixers. What we're dealing with here is a straight-up, two-channel DVS scratch mixer that's seamlessly compatible with both Serato DJ and Serato's DVS - naturally including loops, cues and FX control. It even has a USB port for your laptop.
Serato FX & Beat FX
The DJM-S9 is a scratch mixer with an effects module and integrated DDJ-SP1 that has been specifically designed for use with turntables - the PLX-1000 in particular. Both the crossfader and volume faders feature curve control and reverse, so DJs can adjust the actual feel of the faders and find their personal sweet spot. Above the faders you'll find performance pads that trigger loops, samples and hot cues. The internal effects (flanger, phaser and a backspin feature, for instance) are based on Pioneer's Sound Color FX and the effects sections can be engaged via an ON and LOCK ON while the intensity of an effect can be toggled with the central rotary knob.
Battle Ready
The top section of the S9 consists of two separate loop and browse sections to navigate your music library. Even a three-band EQ, gain control and high and low-pass filters have been included and there's two of them, since this is essential for a back2back-routine. A set of turntables or CDJs can be connected to the S9 as well as an external effects unit. Make no mistake, Pioneer's DJM-S9 is such a highly comprehensive and detailed battle mixer that it might be correctly called a 909 on performance enhancers.
