Author John Riley has worked with Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, among others. In 'The Art of Bop Drumming', he gives many exercises that cover soloing, shifting rhythmic patterns, and 'comping'; actively accompanying a soloist. Technique for brushes is of course covered. John Riley clearly explains sound, functionality and musicality. The included play-along CD contains several songs and exercises. Play 'standards' with Bob Mintzer (ten. sax), Phill Markowitz (piano), James Genus (bass), and John Riley (drums). Een van de beste drumboeken die er is. En ik heb er al uit meer dan 100 gewerkt. Goede inspirerende uitleg. De coördinatieoefeningen zijn direct muzikaal toepasbaar en niet zo droog als in andere boeken. Leuke play along jazz tunes op het eind. Het vervolg 'Beyond bob drumming' mag er ook zeker zijn.

Zeer mooi drumboek gemaakt door de echte meesters.
Er zit een duidelijke lijn in het boek die je kan volgen zodat je het boek helemaal kan doorwerken. Hierdoor zal je aan het eind al goed uit de voeten kunnen met de basis en het wat complexere jazz drummen. Je kunt ook heel goed losse onderdelen uit het boek behandelen als je alleen daar je aandacht op wil focussen. Zelf vind ik het heel erg leuk dat er ook achtergrond informatie en quotes (van bekende drummers) over de bepaalde onderwerpen in staan. Dit geeft net dat beetje motivatie dat je overhaalt om door te studeren als je al een 2 uur bezig bent.
Zeker een aanrader dus!
