If you want to be able to practise at home without annoying many people, it is quite a difficult task. An electronic drum kit always makes some noise and is also expensive. Throwing blankets and towels over your drum kit isn't ideal either. Fortunately, there is a good solution that does work: mesh sheets. You can put the Evans SoundOff mesh heads on any acoustic set. The heads in this set are suitable for drum sets that have the following diameters: 20-inch bass drum, 12- and 13-inch toms, a 16-inch floortom and a 14-inch snare drum. Put these sheets on the drums of your drum kit and your neighbours will be very grateful. The playing feel remains about the same, although you will notice that the rebound (the extent to which your sticks bounce back up) is a bit greater. You can adjust this by tightening the skins a little looser. OK, the drums sound softer now but what about the cymbals?

If you don't do anything to your cymbals, you don't have much use for mesh skins. This is because your cymbals will still sound as loud as they did before. Damping mats and other solutions - they work but they are not ideal if you just want to play your drums with a playing feel and sound close to your normal drum kit. Fortunately, there are cymbals that sound much less harsh than normal cymbals, like Fazley's CYM MUTE cymbals. In this set, we've done a 14-inch hihat, a 16-inch crash and a 20-inch ride - every drummer's most used cymbals. Thanks to the many holes in the cymbals, they sound up to 80% less loud! And that can mean more than one thing: in combination with the SoundOff heads, you can go wild without someone knocking on your door every five minutes asking you to turn it down!
