Combining two types of wood isn't exactly a new technique, but combining birch and bubinga in one drum shell is rather innovative. And that's exactly what Tama did in their Starclassic Performer BB series, which means that this five-piece shell set has the power of the birch and the warm lows of the bubinga. This five-piece shell set consists of a 22 x 20-inch virgin bass drum, 10 x 6.5 and 12 x 7-inch toms, and 14 x 12 and 16 x 14 floor toms with a Satin Pearl White finish.

The 6mm-thick shells of the toms and floor toms are made of four plies of birch wrapped around three plies of bubinga. The bass drum, however, has an additional ply of birch, meaning that it is 8 mm thick. The toms cannot be mounted on the virgin bass drum, so instead Tama included two MC69 clamps so that you can attach them to any regular stand. And thanks to the Quick-Lock system on the tom brackets and floor tom legs, mounting them is a quick and easy affair. Furthermore, the toms are fitted with the StarCast tom mounting system that suspends them from the hoops. These hoops are die-cast to eliminate any structural weak spots, enabling them to keep the tension on the drumheads consistent and makes them easier to tune.
Other hardware
The bass drum features wooden hoops that are held in place by special claw hooks, which feature a rubber lining that protects the hoops and prevents the hooks from rattling if you tune your heads quite loosely. Additionally, the floor tom legs features special air chambers that keep the vibrations in the shell from disappearing into the ground. All hardware on the shells features the same chrome-plated finish. All in all, this five-piece shell set is a great kit for drummers who are looking for a unique, rich sound.
