Yamaha PHX Shell Set Textured Amber Sunburst

The Yamaha PHX shell set consists of a bass drum and three toms from Yamaha's top series of drum sets. When designing and producing the PHX (pronounced "phoenix") series, the artisans over at Yamaha put 40 years of Yamaha experience and technology to good use. The 11-ply shells consist of three different wood types, with the hardest wood at the core with the softest on the exterior. The core layer is made of the incredibly hard jatoba wood, which is surrounded by kapur hardwood, with the outermost layer being made of maple wood. This hybrid structure lends itself to maximum resonance of the top so the drums get a fully unique sound that's suited for every musical application. And of course such an excellent technological performance deserves to look good too, which is why these shells feature an attractive Textured Amber Sunburst finish and silver-coloured hoops.

The comfortable tension of the PHX shell set

The Yamaha technicians paid attention to every small detail that could affect the sound of a drum. This is why the number of vent holes differs depending on the size of the shell. In such a way, each and every tom and bass drum feature optimised sustain, mids and lows, projection and playing comfort. Furthermore, the Remo Clear Ambassador skins on the toms and the Remo Powerstroke 3 skins on the bass drum are stretched over 30-degree bearing edges. The radii of the bearing edges are different on each type of drum in order to get the very most out of the sound of each drum. Such attention to detail helped to develop a pristine drum set that you'll be able to enjoy for the years to come!

Clever mounting

The new Hook Lug mounting system minimises the rotation of the lug casing when you're tuning the drums, and it supports the tuning bolt at even the highest tensions. Through smart placement of the lugs, unwelcome overtones produced by the shells are reduced, delivering a richer core tone. Moreover, maximum resonance of the toms is guaranteed by Yamaha's new and improved YESSII mounting system. This system makes use of a special rubber material and maple wood plate that are placed between the hardware and the shell, in order to keep the hardware's contact with the shell at a minimum. In such a way, the vibrations of the tom and hardware are separated from one another and undesired resonance is avoided.
