General

The new-and-improved D’Angelico EXL-1 is a classic-looking arch-top guitar that wouldn't look out of place in the collection of any seasoned jazz guitarist. On the other hand, the fistful of upgrades this hollow-bodied electric guitar boasts also make it cut out for fresh-faced players. D'Angelico have gone for a maple back and sides topped with spruce, plus a slim C-profile maple neck to support supple leads as well as complex chord-play. The ovangkol fretboard, meanwhile, features medium vintage frets for the light touch needed to play for hours on end.

Vintage Charm, Modern Build

D'Angelico have clearly paid a lot of attention to detail, polishing off the EXL-1 with pearloid fretboard-and-headstock inlays, a stair-step bridge and bound F-holes. At the same time, the hardware and electronics are bang up to date and include a floating mini-humbucker, a dual-action truss rod and trusty Grover tuners.
