Here, Epiphone treat us to all the classic build, aesthetic vibe and versatility of this upstart of an electric guitar at maybe a quarter of the price. This devoted emulation of the genre-defining and refining model comes loaded with double volume and tone potentiometers to shape the solid and pointed character of two authentic sounding mini-humbuckers. The welcome modern upgrade, meanwhile, is the stable LockTone bridge that ensures improved tuning when compared to its inspiration and also doesn't threaten to shift while re-stringing.

Waanzinnig goede gitaar! Was nooit fan van het model, maar ik ben helemaal om. Het is alsof je in een grotere auto stapt dan je gewend ben. Mooi gelaagd hout die je ook in de hals terug ziet, het is 1 lang stuk van body naar de nek. Heerlijke sound, pickups hebben net die sparkle extra die de humbuckers missen. Niet zwaar, 3.6kg meen ik. De tegenhangers van Gibson zijn 3 tot 20 keer zo duur en die kunnen eigenlijk niet veel winst behalen op deze behalve het logo erop. Nadeel: het past niet in een normale gitaarhoes.

Het grote verschil met het (veel duurdere) voorbeeld vind ik de lak (geen nitro), de elementen (niet slechter maar duidelijk anders) en de iets kleinere kop en daarmee ook de positionering van de tuners. Wat me zeer aangenaam verrast is het gewicht, de balans en de geweldige bespeelbaarheid van de hals. De sustain is fenomenaal dankzij de doorlopende hals, net als bij het origineel. Het fretwerk is onberispelijk in de zin van absoluut geen ongelijke frets volgens check met een fretrocker. De afwerking van de uiteinden van de frets is niet slecht, maar ook niet perfect. De eerlijkheid gebiedt te zeggen dat dat tegenwoordig bij heel veel (ook dure merken) het geval is. Maar het is desgewenst gemakkelijk zelf bij te werken met een fret end file. Kortom: een aanrader! Tip: als je geen enorme grote en zware firebird koffer wil (of een speciale dure firebird gibag): neem een goede gigbag voor basgitaar van nog geen drie tientjes! Wel even checken of het past natuurlijk, maar in 9 van de 10 gevallen past het perfect!
