General
In the late '70s, Eddie Van Halen unleashed a guitar revolution by taking matters into his own hands and fitting his ST-style guitar with a humbucker. This led to the rise of the Superstrats. Since then, he's been constantly working on developing his own ultimate guitar, and the EVH Wolfgang Special is the culmination of all those years of experience and that long search for perfection. This model has a basswood body, a comfortable neck and top-quality hardware including the EVH branded Floyd Rose Locking Tremolo bridge with D-Tuna and custom-designed Wolfgang humbuckers.
A touch of Eddie
A lot of the design characteristics from Eddie’s own Wolfgang model are present on the Wolfgang Special MN. The basswood body has a comfortable heel, for instance, which makes even the highest frets easily accessible. The maple neck has a hand-rubbed urethane finish and the fretboard has a compound radius. We've already mentioned the D-Tuna system that makes drop D tuning ridiculously easy and, just like the original model, this Wolfgang model has two Wolfgang humbuckers that mounted directly into the body.
Unique electronics
Contrary to what you may expect, Eddie Van Halen actually prefers medium output humbuckers. As such, the specially-designed Wolfgang Humbuckers deliver just the right sound – they are both exceptionally musical and responsive with biting trebles, well-defined mids and impressive bass. What's more, thanks to these medium output pickups, the Wolfgang Special is much more versatile than a guitar with high output pickups would be. From screaming leads to fat metal riffs, and from classic rock to sugar-sweet ballads, the EVH Wolfgang special does it all! Finally, the tone controls are well thought-out and the low-friction volume control allows for those famous violin effects.
