The introduction of the Ibanez RG in 1987 can be seen as a milestone in the history of rock-focussed guitars. The super-sharp look, snug playing comfort and broad range sound are just as impressive today as they were back then. So it should comes as no surprise that Ibanez has breathed new life into this icon of a six-string as part of the Genesis Collection. This electric guitar has been built with pride in Japan and is an excellent pick for gigging guitarists who demand all of the aesthetics as well as the sonics.
The Ibanez RG550: It's All About the Rock
One of the most noteworthy features of the Ibanez RG550 is the neck, which boasts a five-piece maple and walnut construction to result in fully optimised stability. The Super Wizard profile, meanwhile, combines with a twenty-four-fret maple fretboard to polish off the perfect platform for speedy solos, and the Edge tremolo bridge combines with a locking nut to support everything from subtle vibratos to wild dive-bombs without dropping tune. Capping it all off with elastic tone that can be dialled in to back up pretty much any playing style, we have a fat HSH pickup configuration, planting an alnico humbucker at the bridge and a ceramic humbucker as the neck, sandwiching an alnico single-coil in the middle.

Voor een schappelijke prijs een Japanse Ibanez die echt een flinke klasse hoger aanvoelt en speelt dan de vaak gelijke of zelfs hoger geprijsde Ibanez'en uit Indonesië. Niets mis overigens met gitaren die in andere Aziatisch landen geproduceerd zijn maar je merkt meteen het verschil op een Japanse gitaar. De balans, speelbaarheid, afwerking van de nek en afwerking van de lak zijn grandioos. De Edge tremolo is waanzinnig goed en de Gotoh tuners zijn ook echt top. Indien deze brug goed is afgesteld blijft de gitaar echt absurd goed in tune; wat je ook doet met de tremolo; de snaren komen altijd precies terug in juiste tuning.
Er zijn zeker minpunten.
- tremolo arm is lomp zwaar en minder gevoelig; deze heb ik vervangen voor een carbon arm van Ibanez en dat is echt een aanrader maar wel weer 70 euro boven op de prijs van de gitaar.
- De pickups zijn oke maar het zijn zeker geen Dimarzio' s of Seymour Duncans, dus mogelijk vervangen in de nabije toekomst
- Kleur is knetter fel (vooral de Dessert Yellow) en mij stoort het niet maar ze geven zowat licht in het donker; zeker als je er met een uv lamp op schijnt, oogverblindend
- De gitaar komt zonder tas of koffer en deze wil je echt vervoeren in een stevige koffer of goede tas; zeker met het tremolo systeem
Ik ben zo enorm onder de indruk van de speelbaarheid van deze Ibanez dat ik er een week later nog een bij kocht in een andere kleur. De een staat in D en de ander in E. Daarom vijf sterren; ondanks de minpuntjes. Daar kijk ik graag overheen.
Als je een Ibanez wil aanschaffen dan geeft deze echt veel waar voor je geld.
