With the System-500 521 VCF Eurorack module, Roland offers two filters in a compact Eurorack housing. It's a fantastic addition to your Roland System-500 modular synthesizer setup, as it's a great way of making your oscillators sound more friendly or feisty. Each filter comes with three source signal inputs. The frequency and resonance of both low-pass filters can be controlled, and a special switch for high-pass filtering (with two fixed frequencies) is also at your disposal. Additionally, the System-500 521 VCF module offers two inputs (per filter) for modulation, which means you're able to control the filter frequency by means of (external) envelopes and/or external LFOs. Naturally, you can rely on a beautifully warm, typical Roland filter sound.
Roland System-500 521 VCF: a modular system
Roland's System-500 series is a modular system, so you're free to experiment at will with the 521 VCF module. How about connecting two separate sources for the two filters, for instance, or routing the left filter's output to the right filter's input? It's even possible to route a filter's output back to its own input, although you would have to be careful not to create an extreme feedback loop. It just goes to show how flexible this system really is.
Practical
What is it about modular synthesizers that makes synth fans tick? Could it be the many knobs, or the way they make you feel like you're in the cockpit of a plane? Whatever it is, in order to create a practical setup in your studio, you'll need a Eurorack case for your modules.
