For those guitarists that thought the Hoof just didn't take it far enough, EarthQuaker Devices offer up a more grizzly, more ruthless, and more formidable incarnation in the form of the Cloven Hoof. While the standard Hoof came partly driven by germanium circuit transistors, in the Cloven version, these have been replaced entirely by silicon diodes. Without diving too far into the details, this means way more gain. The cherished 'Shift' function of the Hoof has not only been retained but drastically improved, since the range has been raised to four times that of the OG, so you have an insane amount of control over the sound. This raw stompbox is, of course, true bypass and has been made by hand in Akron, Ohio.
The American company Earthquaker Devices was founded in 2004 by accident. When a potentiometer on founder and guitarist Jamie Stillman's favourite overdrive pedal suddenly broke, he decided to take matters into his own human hands and repair it himself. To his surprise - when he opened the pedal, he found the circuitry a lot easier to understand than he expected and it wasn't long before he made his very first pedal. Stillman launched Earthquaker Devices in 2005, while he was still working as tour manager for none other than the Black Keys during 2004 through to 2010. The upstart and innovator of a stompbox builder has since grown in both size and popularity and now, Earthquaker Devices are renowned for offering off-the-wall yet affordable handwired boutique-style pedals that have been lovingly built by musicians for musicians!
