The prerequisites for a solid steel are fairly straightforward: it needs to be made of steel. The Shubb GS-1 guitar steel naturally covers the basics here, but also has a comfy hardwood grip that's been carefully contoured for optimum comfort, a relaxed playing feel and steady grip.
The method of playing stringed instruments with a steel first originated in Hawaiian music, which explains why the distinct sound that results is often referred to as that 'Hawaiian sound'. These days however, steels are more commonly seen in the hands of many blues musicians.
