Devine SM-200 condenser measurement microphone
Bax Music appear to be the only supplier of this particular measurement microphone, and at a price which is considerably less than any equivalent competitor product. As such, one needs to be cautious; or, perhaps not.
The item is well-packed when received. The included frequency plot is generic - at this price point a plot specially created for each mic is unlikely - but suggests a response curve pretty flat from 25Hz to 20kHz, quite an achievement for a product at this price.
In use, it is very simple to set up. The supplied elasticated stand mount is absolutely vital; the mic body can pick up LF vibrations through the stand if it is not used.
I connected mine to a Behringer X32 and, using the mixer's own Pink Noise Generator, was able to set up my 2 x Alto Professional TS212s and 1 x Alto Professional TS215 Sub, to give an "almost" flat frequency response from about 35Hz (the lowest the Sub can produce) to about 18kHz. (This is a sound system in a nineteenth century built church, so not a perfect acoustice by any means.)
The difference in quality of music reproduction following this work has been quite astounding; most noticeably, increased clarity and definition in both HF and LF. I intend to carry out further work to further refine the sound; currently I am using the 6-band EQ built into the main outputs of the X32 to "equalise" the output signal. My current thinking is to test whether I can achieve an even flatter response by using the mixer's built-in 30-band Graphic Equaliser as an Insert on the main outputs.
All in all, quite a remarkable product at an astounding price!
