If you are looking for a universal, all-in-one mallet, then the Vic Firth Contemporary series is the right place. The mallets can be used on basically any suitable instrument. The stick itself is made of rattan, which gives you quite a bit of flexibility, but with the sturdiness of birch wood, for example. The ends of the mallets are made of synthetic string with a rubber core. This is the M243 Very Hard model.
