General

The Cosmic Handpan D Gurdu by Terré Percussion is made by hand in Bali. It takes a long time to make one, and there are only few people in the world who know how! It features the D Gurdu tuning, which means you can play the following notes: D3, A3, C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4. Playing this instrument is done with hands and fingers to create a warm, earthy tone that is reminiscent of steel drums. The Cosmic Handpan in D Gurdu tuning is 59 cm in diameter and 21 cm high. It also comes with a rucksack for easy and safe transportation.

Terré Percussion Cosmic Handpan D Gurdu

As mentioned above, this handpan drum is made by hand. In order to make one, however, a certain level of skill and expertise is required, but there are few people in the world who can call themselves masters of the trade. The Cosmic Handpan consists of two rounded iron plates that are first hammered roughly into shape. After that, the bottom half is completed, which is essentially the body and is equipped with a sound hole. The top of the handpan involves precision work and a few thousand hammer strikes to achieve just the right tones. It's a time-consuming job to get a single instrument tuned correctly, while maintaining the clarity and getting each tone in balance. If you invest in a handpan drum, you're getting more than merely an instrument; you're getting a unique piece of craftsmanship that you'll be able to enjoy for years to come!

Construction and usage

The handpan drum is a relatively new instrument which was developed in the year 2000 in Switzerland. The original handpan was inspired by the Caribbean steel drum, and after a while, percussion manufacturers around the world began making their own versions of the unique instrument. Handpan drums are used in world music genres and are also commonly used for therapeutic purposes and meditation sessions. Because the tones are all in the same key, they flow together harmoniously and create a soothing effect. What's more, in some parts of the world, the handpan drum has spiritual significance.

Terré Percussion - Fair Trade

Terré Percussion is known as a brand that promotes the preservation and development of ethnic instruments, percussion instruments in particular. They only use natural or recycled materials to produce their instruments and everything is done by hand. Everyone involved in the production and distribution processes are guaranteed a fair salary. They don't use child labour, which is unfortunately still a big problem in some of the areas in which they operate. Terré Percussion choose small, local, family-run companies to produce their products rather than large factories and carry out regular checks several times per year.
