General
With the introduction of the Seaboard Rise USB keyboard, Roli wrote music history. Unlikely though it may seem, this device resembles a hybrid between a piano and a violin. The Seaboard features keys that can be played like a piano, keyboard or synthesizer, but it's also possible to control the instrument by sliding your hands across the keyboard, as if you're operating a large ribbon controller. Horizontal glides, for instance, create an astonishing portamento effect, while vertical slides control factors like loudness. Remarkable as it sounds, this keyboard offers the same expressive possibilities as a violin.
Characteristics of the Roli Seaboard Rise
The Rise offers 25 keywaves, as Roli calls them. The internal contact strips are covered by a silicone layer, which indeed makes them look like waves. Of course these keys feature both velocity sensitivity and aftertouch, characteristics Roli calls Strike and Press respectively. Lift is another interesting parameter, which refers to the speed at which a pressed key is released. We've already mentioned the horizontal Glides and the vertical Slides. Together, all of these parameters provide you with plenty of ways of expressing yourself musically - more than any other master keyboard possibly could.
Equator
If you know a thing or two about sound synthesis and MIDI controllers, no doubt you'll wonder how - and whether - all of this actually works. The answer to that is Equator, the software that comes with the Seaboard. With this comprehensive virtual synthesizer, you're able to use the Rise's expressive options to their full extent. The software differs from standard virtual instruments - the Seaboard isn't a standard sort of instrument, after all - and offers wavetable oscillators, sample playback and FM synthesis, complemented by two LFOs, extensive routing and elaborate filters (including comb filters). That's a pretty impressive package, to say the least, but the instrument's true power lies in its performance. Instead of reading about it, you should really experience the sound and feel of the Roli Seaboard Rise for yourself. It's like nothing you've heard or felt before!
Tips or comments about this product- Please note: Equator software was specifically developed for the Seaboard, and supports its unique means of expression. Combine the Seaboard with other software, and it functions as a regular USB/MIDI keyboard, without these expressive possibilities.

Ik gebruik de Rise in combinatie met de Komplete software van Native Instruments. In het bijzonder heb ik het dan over de Kontact samples. Hierin zit direct de meerwaarde van de aankoop. Kies een gitaarsample en ervaar dat de Rise expressie kan geven aan je spel dat niet geëvenaard kan worden door welk ander instrument (op de gitaar zelf na dan). Hammer-on's en off's zijn mogelijk, vibrato van de snaar en pitchbending zonder daarvoor ingewikkelde manoeuvres te moeten doen met je vrije hand. Allemaal direct vanaf je vingertoppen te bespelen!
En dat is dan pas één instrument. Denk aan de oneindige mogelijkheden met andere akoestische instrumenten of zelfs aan de expressie- en modulatiemogelijkheden met software synths.
Is het een perfect instrument?
Nee. Het instellen van de expressie per instrument en sessie, is wat vervelend omdat het niet out-of-the-box werkt. Maar het kost nog geen minuut om een kontakt sample klaar te maken voor expressie.
In de DAW is het maar bij een handje vol direct en optimaal te gebruiken. Dit heeft te maken met de "MPE" compatibiliteit. Dit heeft Logic X bijvoorbeeld wel, maar Ableton en FL studio (waar ik mee werk) niet. Dan volgt er een ingewikkeld routing proces om het wel werkend te krijgen, maar ik heb daar het geduld niet voor. Al dit voorgaande is echter niet toe te rekenen aan de Seaboard Rise, maar aan de DAW.
Conclusie:
Met de rise kun je als beginner al diverse instrumenten bespelen met een realisme dat je niet behaalt met een normaal keyboard. Hierdoor zijn realistische gitaar solo's, sprekende blazers en strijkers met eenvoud te behalen. Zonder achteraf de automation in te hoeven draaien of klikken. In één recordingssessie speel je de noten, expressie en automation in! Voor mij is dit instrument een eye-opener geworden en een onmisbaar onderdeel van mijn producties.

Plussen:
De "touch" is erg fijn en de bouwkwaliteit is werkelijk fantastisch:
- siliconen laag voelt erg solide aan.
- behuizing is verder geheel van metaal en weegt erg veel voor een 25 keys, maar dat komt het spelen alleen maar ten goede.
- equator is als een "maatpak" voor deze midi-controller (ik vind dit overigens niet de juiste benaming want het is veel, veel meer dan een controller)
- vergulde USB kabel standaard meegeleverd, deze is lang genoeg.
- Equator werkt prima met Cubase, maar ook als stand-alone versie.
- De standaard patches uit Equator zijn erg goed van kwaliteit en eenvoudig naar je eigen klank/klankkleur aan te passen en op te slaan.
Minnen/verbeterpunten:
- Er wordt geen voedingsadapter meegeleverd en dat is erg jammer, zeker gezien de prijs die betaald moet worden. Je zou dit mogen verwachten vind ik, maar goed het is zoals het is.....
- Afhankelijk van je geluidskaart kan er wat latency ontstaan en de een snelle CPU met voldoende geheugen is dan ook sterk aan te bevelen! Ik draai W7.
- (nog) geen mogelijkheid om "favorieten" te maken die je met de cursor key op het Seaboard kunt doorscrollen, zodat je niet telkens met je muis naar een volgende preset hoeft te klikken tijdens het spelen.
Zou ik hem aanbevelen?
